The Department of Information Technology was established on October 10, 2005, according to Decision No. 839/QĐ – NNI issued by the University President. It comprises 5 specialized departments with 70 staff members and nearly 600 students. However, the Computer Science undergraduate program had been implemented since January 25, 2002, following Decision No. 439/QĐ/BGD&ĐT-ĐH by the Minister of Education and Training, in response to the demand for IT workforce for the country's industrialization and modernization efforts, especially in the field of Agricultural Modernization.
The department currently consists of 5 departments (Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, Physics), including some traditional departments such as Mathematics and Physics, which have been established since the university's founding. Software Engineering and Computer Science departments have evolved from the Computer Center established in the early 1980s.

Research Projects:
Research projects in the field of IT and its applications have been conducted since the early stages. Between 1999-2005, faculty members and students of the department undertook numerous applied research projects contributing to the university's research efforts. The department successfully developed various software applications in agriculture, such as land use planning, GIS, remote sensing, biology, economics, and educational management. Notable software products included optimization solvers, decision support systems for land use planning, data processing software for biology and agriculture, and web-based quiz systems developed since 2002. The department effectively utilized software for teaching, including management and e-learning software (Moodle), statistical software (SPSS, Minitab), optimization software, operational research, and simulations in computer science and its applications in research.
Between 2006-2010, alongside enhancing the quality of IT education for the nation, the IT department defined its research direction, focusing on Bioinformatics, GIS technology applications, remote sensing, and simulation models for resource management and planning. The department also designed statistical processing software, optimization tools, software testing, and development tools. They actively participated in state-level and ministry-level research projects. During this period, the department published nearly 50 papers in reputable national and international journals. Notably, since 2009, the department members (Nguyễn Thị Thủy, Trần Đức Quỳnh, Nguyễn Xuân Thảo, Nguyễn Duy Bình, Phạm Quang Dũng) have authored six international papers and presented seventeen papers at international conferences.
Between 2010-2019, faculty members and students of the IT department continued their applied research projects, significantly contributing to the university's research endeavors. They successfully developed various software applications in agriculture, such as land use planning, GIS, remote sensing, biology, economics, and educational management.
In the subsequent period, while continuing to enhance the quality of IT education for the nation, the IT department focused its research efforts on Bioinformatics, Image Processing, Artificial Intelligence, GIS technology applications, remote sensing, and simulation models for resource management and planning. They designed statistical processing software, optimization tools, software testing, and development tools. Since 2018, the department has established a strong research group called "Application of Information Technology in Agriculture," achieving initial successes and enhancing the research spirit among its members, leading to the creation of numerous applied products in the field of Agriculture.
